Alone EP

Higher Calling

In 1994 teachers and students at a youth and church centre in the Bronx recorded a gospel & funk album as Higher Calling, shared on a handful of private CDs. We found an ultra-rare copy digging at Amore Discos in Barcelona. The standout: a distorted lo-fi house remix of “Alone”, tacked on as a bonus by teacher, vocalist and producer Bervin Harris. Thirty years on it’s still a secret weapon on the festival circuit — so we went back to the Bronx to find him.

Arjune Popo & Mastana Orchestra

Rotterdam, 1984: a young singer from Trinidad, a Surinamese manager and the Dutch-Hindustani Mastana Orchestra cut fifty instrumentals in a few days under a strict “no solos” rule. One of them became a chutney-disco grail. With the blessing of guitarist Krishn Malhoe — the last living link to the session — we made a revitalised version with fresh drums, a driving bassline and an extended break.

Slaman Djougou EP

Hamed Farras

Hamed Farras has been at the centre of Ivorian reggae for over thirty years. Two tracks from his 1991 debut tape never got the attention they deserved — recorded in downtown Abidjan with arranger Georges Kouakou (Alpha Blondy) and Hamed’s brothers. Includes a dancefloor remix by Lipelis.
